Streisand presenting the award

“He has a passion for telling stories that reflect the strengths and the vulnerabilities of the American spirit, our struggle to achieve what is highest in our nature,” Barbra said of Robert Redford in her tribute to the actor-director-producer during her presentation of his Honorary Oscar for Lifetime Achievement at the 74th Annual Academy Awards in Hollywood on March 24, 2002. She praised Redford as“a beloved and invaluable force in American film,” as she extolled his virtues and achievements including establishing the Sundance Institute and subsequent film festival to nurture bold and talented independent voices in film. Following a four-minute clip montage, with fond memories of working with him in The Way We Were, Barbra introduced the honoree as “a man who gave me one of the most exciting and memorable experiences of my career. I was thrilled to be his leading lady, and I'm thrilled to present this award to Robert Redford.”
