1970s Albums (Page 2)

Introduction | 60s Part 1| 60s Part 2 | 70s Part 1 | 70s Part 2 | 1980s

Columbia Records utilized stickers on the CD jewel case to denote which CDs had been remastered. Sometimes the CD artwork went unchanged and the only way to tell if you were purchasing a newly remastered CD was to look for a sticker.

Never Remastered LOGO If you see this symbol next to an album below, Barbra Archives has determined that Columbia Records has never remastered the CD since it was originally released, probably way back in the 1980s. This means that the sound quality of the CD is substandard according to today's audio expectations as most early 1980s CDs were taken from the LP master.

Notes: Albums are in order by their original release date. Only U.S. CDs are examined here.

Please read Barbra Archives' Introduction. More complete information on Streisand's discography can be found here.

CD Packaging Notes:
The photo montage on the original gatefold LP was cut in half for the CD release. The CD booklet contained only the right side of the montage. The entire montage, as it originally appeared inside the LP is pictured below:

Also, the painting on the back cover by Bill Shirley is reproduced on the CD—but very small. On the original LP, the painting filled the entire back cover:

Classical Barbra (1976)

Never Remastered LOGO

CD Release Date: 1990

Catalog Number(s):
33452

CD Packaging Notes:
Some time after the original released of the 1990 Classical Barbra CD, Columbia redesiged the cover by dding a blue and gold "CBS Records Masterworks" logo across the album's cover.

The LP's lyrics and liner notes by Homer Dennison (which were originally printed on the album sleeve) were reprinted for the CD booklet.

It's a shame Columbia has not touched this album since 1990. One wonders what a proper digital remastering of this album would sound like.

CD Packaging Notes:
The 2002 liner notes restored the lyrics to the order in which they appear on the CD. The 2002 CD reprinted the LP gatefold photo collage in the center of the CD booklet.

Both 1994 and 2002 CDs are red with the Columbia logo.

The 2002 CD was released in the U.K. with a bonus track: "Evergreen (Love Theme from "A Star Is Born") [Spanish Version]".

CD Packaging Notes:
Oy! Columbia really missed the boat on this one. The CD has been available for over 20 years and no one has ever thought to restore the original album's artwork.

The LP, originally released in 1977, hot on the heels of Barbra's megahit, A Star is Born, featured a pull-out lyric sheet and a photo picture sleeve.

Streisand Superman Picture Sleeve

The picture sleeve (above) listed "Musicians and Friends", which has been omitted from the CD. Also credited were Seiniger and Associates for the album's art direction (again, missing from the CD insert). Steve Schapiro's photo credit and Barbra's "special thanks to Charles Koppelman" are absent from the CD as well.

Streisand Superman Lyric Sheet from LP

Streisand Superman Liner Notes from LP

The lyric sheet opened to reveal a center spread of Barbra in her Superman outfit (photos by Steve Schapiro). Noticeably missing from the CD are Barbra's liner notes, which appeared on this page of the original LP! Since any Streisand fan who does not have the original LP has not been able to read her liner notes for 20 years, I have reproduced them below:

How about Songbird photo outtakes if Columbia ever re-releases this CD?

Songbird (1978)

Catalog Number(s):

CD Packaging Notes:
Another Streisand album whose original artwork is missing from the CD release!

First, what was included: Columbia took the 9 photographs of Barbra and her dogs from the LP's back cover and redistributed them on the CD: The CD back cover displayed Sadie and Barbra; The CD booklet spread displayed Big Red, Clyde, Rocky, Leona, Charity, Ester Hoffman and Bullet Anderson and their "kids".

What's missing: the original album's picture sleeve and credits. Here's what they looked like:

Songbird Photo Picture Sleeve

The sleeve had a cute combination of all the album's song titles:

I Don't Break Easily Deep In The Night so Stay Away because You Don't Bring Me Flowers anymore. I'm heading for a Love Breakdown so Honey Can I Put On Your Clothes. I need One More Night with A Man I Loved, how about Tomorrow?

Wet CD

Fans would love to see the Casilli photo outtakes from the Wet session, like this one with Barbra and Sadie.

Wet (1979)

CD Release Date: 1990 + 1994 + 2008

Catalog Number(s):
CK 36258 (1990 + 1994)
CK 723977 (2008, SBME SPECIAL MKTS.)

Digitally Restored from the original master tapes, digitally remastered
1994 CD case sticker

CD Packaging Notes:
Well, they got half of the CD insert right ... The tinted photograph of Streisand by Mario Casilli —which originally took up one side of the LP's sleeve—was reproduced on the fold-out CD insert.

Not reproduced was the other side of the LP sleeve with two more Casilli shots. (Another mistake: Casilli's name is spelled wrong on the album and the misspelling was reproduced on the CD. It's 'Casilli' not 'Caselli'.)

Streisand Wet LP Sleeve
These photos were not included on the Wet CD.
