Barbra Streisand: "Back To Broadway"
... the unreleased sessions & songs

In Barbra Streisand's 1991 4-disk set, Just for the Record, she tantalized fans by writing in her album notes:

"My future recording plans include a trip BACK TO BROADWAY, and this lovely ballad ["Warm All Over"] will be part of that collection."

BACK TO BROADWAY, however, was not released until 1993. "Warm All Over" was not included, either.

What happened along the way is an interesting story about how Barbra created an album and what her creative process is. In this particular case, the original BACK TO BROADWAY songs are locked in the infamous Columbia Records vaults ...

Barbra's first BROADWAY ALBUM was hugely successful. Released in November 1985, it went on to win Barbra a Grammy Award and monumental sales. A year later, while working on her film, NUTS, Streisand performed the ONE VOICE concert and subsequently released a live album of the event.

In April 1988 Barbra began working on her follow-up to THE BROADWAY ALBUM. She reunited with Rupert Holmes. (Holmes and Streisand created LAZY AFTERNOON together and he braved the STAR IS BORN storm with her and Jon Peters.)

They recorded, with a 60-piece orchestra, at the MGM/Lorimar studios in Culver City. Barbra described it as "a cavernous soundstage at the old MGM Studios."

Because of the venue's size, and because Holmes needed to see Streisand while he conducted the orchestra, a video camera was used. Rupert Holmes told "The Barbra Archives":

"She was so far away from me, the remedy I came up with was to have a TV camera in the vocal booth ... I had a huge monitor by me so it was better than having her stand right next to me. I could see her face so closely so we were able to cut off [the orchestra] correctly." [Read the interview! Click here...]

Barbra recorded eight songs in April 1988. Only two have been released: "Warm All Over" and "You'll Never Know" — both on 1991's JUST FOR THE RECORD.

The rest of the songs remain unreleased to this day. Some believe those vocals and song selections are superior to what ended up on Streisand's 1993 BACK TO BROADWAY album. It is unknown why Barbra did not use the songs, and useless to speculate. Rupert Holmes, in his 2003 interview with "The Barbra Archives", offered his ideas as to why Barbra abandoned the songs.

For the record, Barbra released TILL I LOVED YOU instead of BACK TO BROADWAY in 1988. The Broadway follow-up came 5 years later.

Below, the songs she recorded are listed. Also, some shots from the video of Streisand at MGM/Lorimar are displayed.

How Are Things in Glocca Mora? / Heather on the Hill

from FINIAN'S RAINBOW / BRIGADOON

A beautiful combination of these two songs with outstanding Streisand vocals!

On My Own

from LES MISERABLES

Barbra only does a few takes. She does not seem to approve of the song.

A Funny Thing Happened On My Way To Love

from I CAN GET IT FOR YOU WHOLESALE

Marilyn Cooper sang this in WHOLESALE while Barbra appeared as Miss Marmelstein. Barbra and Rupert do two versions in the sessions: one is a shorter version; another has a key change and longer lyrics.

Moonfall

from THE MYSTERY OF EDWIN DROOD

DROOD was written by Rupert Holmes. Barbra only does two takes of "Moonfall" ... but she is wonderful and you can hear the orchestra applaud at the end of take two.

Make Our Garden Grow

from CANDIDE

Barbra turns in a stellar vocal on this track, holding the last note for almost 20 seconds, á la "A Piece of Sky" ... amazing!

You'll Never Know

duet with 1955 Barbra

Barbra plays with the duet portion of the song, coming in at different points, etc.

Warm All Over

from THE MOST HAPPY FELLA

All I Ask of You

from PHANTOM OF THE OPERA

This is one of the most fascinating tracks. The arrangement here is totally different from the more pop arrangement on TILL I LOVED YOU. Barbra and Rupert do many takes and there are obvious problems with the tempo, orchestration, and lyrics.

Barbra's recording booth contained beautiful fresh flowers Barbra was able to relax sometimes, drink, and nosh on food Barbra greets conductor, arranger Rupert Holmes
