APLA Commitment To Life VI
Los Angeles, CA
Nov. 18, 1992

David Geffen and Barbra Streisand were presented the "Commitment To Life" award by the AIDS Project Los Angeles at the Universal Amphitheater. Barbra's "Streisand Foundation" had contributed thousands to AIDS causes.

Barbra participated in the evening's musical tribute to West Side Story. Patti LaBelle, Natalie Cole, and Sheila E. sang "America" together; Wynonna Judd and Kenny Loggins sang a duet of "Tonight"; Elton John donned pearls and sang "I Feel Pretty".

But Barbra stopped the show when she stepped out onto the stage and the introduction of "I Have A Love" began. Johnny Mathis entered stage left and began singing. When Barbra sang her first lines ("I love him...") the entire audience sighed! The duet finished with "One Hand, One Heart" [Click "Play" to the right to view a video of the duet.]

Introduced by Warren Beatty, Barbra gave an impassioned speech to the mostly gay audience.

After her speech, Barbra sang "Somewhere":

Johnny Mathis & Barbra Streisand

Excerpted from Time Magazine, 11/30/92:

IN THE UNLIKELY EVENT THAT BARBRA STREISAND will perform live anytime soon, rest assured she probably won't do it in a Colorado ski lodge. At a swank AIDS benefit last week, Babs blasted the state's new measure banning antidiscrimination protection for gays and lesbians and urged members of the celebrity-packed audience (Warren Beatty and Liza Minnelli were there) to steer clear of the winter wonderland if a Colorado boycott gets under way. Declared Streisand: "If we're asked to, we must refuse to play where they discriminate."
